Construction
City & Guilds Introductory Certificate in Basic Construction Skills
- Level 1
This
course covers the basic concepts of building and introduces the
learner to the world of construction. To achieve the full level 1
certificate each learner will need to complete the following units
in these occupational areas:
- Painting & Decorating
- Carpentry
- Bricklaying

Plumbing

The plumbing foundation course is devised around a domestic
environment. The tasks involved are real life situations which would
need completion within any house. You will be taught the basics of
pipe bending, soldering and the use of different materials. Working
on projects that include bathroom fitting and heating systems.
You will develop a skill set that will enable you to progress on to further education or apprenticeship with continued and ongoing support from both SDT and the employer.
Electric Installation
The domestic electric course is based upon the electrical
requirements and components within the domestic
properties.
With tutor-lead instruction, you will be guided through the course. This will give you the knowledge and practical skills needed for lighting circuits, consumer units and plug sockets. You will work with our tutors in small groups; thus maximising your learning potential. We will offer advice and guidance throughout and help with college applications, work placement and apprenticeships.
Roofing
The
roofing taster course has been created to give learners an
understanding of how to construct a roofing structure using the
correct methods and tools. Measuring, cutting, fitting batons,
applying felt and fitting tiles.
Tutors will guide you through the course in small groups to ensure that you are maximising your learning potential. This will give the learner practical experience of the work required to develop within this industry.
Tiling
The
tiling taster course has been developed to further the learners
understanding of working within a domestic environment. You will
learn to use the correct tools for tiling, measuring, cutting and
grouting.
You will work in small groups to create and design your own mosaic picture and implement all the knowledge given to you by the tutors.
Careers and Educational Opportunities
The skills gained include valuable life skills, for example; communication, problem solving and customer serviced in addition to the practical skills and knowledge of the Construction Industry. Opportunities into employment or routes into further education will be increased.
Hairdressing Taster Course
The hairdressing taster course has been devised to give the learner ability
and knowledge around the basic
requirements of hairdressing.
This encompasses Health & Safety within a salon, client consultation, cutting and blow drying.
Careers and Educational Opportunities:
Our learners are all given the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learnt in a customer facing environment. You will gain invaluable life skills; including communication, problem solving and customer service. This taster course can lead to further opportunities to enter a City & Guilds Apprenticeship at Level 2.
Hairdressing Apprenticeship
This course is designed to give learners the opportunity to gain
a professional knowledge of the Hair &
Beauty Industry. The following units covered are mandatory and
include:
- Health & Safety
- How to promote a professional impression
- Advise and consult clients
- How to shampoo and condition hair
- Haircutting techniques
- Style, dress hair techniques
- Change Hair Colour
You will be given the opportunity to choose from a range of optional units for example:
- Promotion and sales
- Scalp massage
- How to relax and neutralise Afro-Caribbean Hair
This is a comprehensive course and the learner will be expected to be working within a salon. The course work will be based upon on-going assessments within our training salon and within the workplace. Should a learner require support to locate an employer, we will assist with this via our employability programme.
Careers and Educational Opportunities:
At the end of this course, the learner will have a full and in-depth understanding of the Hairdressing Industry and could progress to study at Level 3. Employment opportunities will be increased.

Beauty Therapy
The Health & Beauty course has been
devised to give the learner ability and knowledge around the basic
requirements of Health & Beauty. This encompasses Health & Safety
within a salon, client consultation, skin analysis and aftercare &
advice. Our learners are all given the opportunity to demonstrate
what they have learnt in a customer facing environment.

Fitness

Our fitness taster course has been designed to engage both the body
and mind to achieve a level of ability that will support your
physical development , strength, wellbeing and knowledge.
You will be shown how to support others, design tutor programmes, assess your own levels of fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle.

The skills gained within the course will support the learner to access further learning or employment opportunities.
Music Technology
This is an opportunity for learners to gain an insight into the
music industry. The key skills covered within the
course cover how
to safely set up and shut down the studio equipment, understanding
the software, audio sampling, recording techniques and formatting
sounds.
At the end of the course the learner will have a greater
understanding of how to progress into further learning
opportunities.

topics covered include:
- Using word processing effectively
- Set up and designing a basic database
- Utilising and understanding spreadsheet tools
- How to use the Internet and electronic communication efficiently
- How to make an effective Power Point presentation.

At the end of this course, the learner will have a greater understanding and knowledge base of computer systems and when and where to effectively use them. Employment and routes into further education are enhanced.
Foundation Learning
Foundation
Learning combines vocational training with functional skills.
These will include development of Maths, English and ICT. The
